What is "Deconstruction?"

Here are a couple of different resources on what deconstruction is that have been helpful in understanding what people mean when they use the term. There is a broad swath of meaning and the two resources below walk through different contexts, and how different groups of people would define deconstruction. These are not official statements made by Kindred Church, but are meant to be a resource to those who desire to do some research.

1: What Does Deconstruction Even Mean?
Desiringgod.org | Jon Bloom
Excerpt: “So, what does deconstruction even mean? It means different things in different contexts. It is a postmodern philosophical label that has been adopted by current and former evangelicals to sometimes mean navigating a faith crisis, to sometimes mean identifying harmful cultural influences that distort the true gospel, to sometimes mean questioning and rejecting traditional evangelical doctrines and authority figures, or to sometimes mean departing the Christian faith altogether.”

3: The Blue Parakeet: Rethinking How You Read the Bible
Scott McKnight
This is a good book to read (or listen to) if you think you might be in the process of deconstruction but don’t want to throw out Christianity altogether. It lays out some helpful building blocks for how to look at the Bible and provides some ideas around how you might start reconciling tough issues seen in the Christian Church.
